Search inside my PHP files on WIn XP?

I have hundreds of PHP files and I want to search inside them.

How do I do this?

I've searched Google high and low but none of the stuff that's taught actually works.

Use a search and replace (you don't HAVE to replace) facility like this . .

    RJL Software - Software - Utility - Simple Search-Replace

It's free and possibly all you need?

The Windows file search can do this, just enter your search term inside the "Containing Text" field instead of the "Search for files or folders named" field.

      No, it can't.
Since XP, it will only search in file types it knows.

        Hi
I certainly second the Notepad++ route.

its a really useful app for developers and is great for capturing all sorts of snippets during the day.

to search your pc for any text based content
        menu> search > findInFiles

it will then search for whatever you want starting wherever you want :-)
        cheers.

What text editor do you use? I know most can do a Find In Files. Definitely Notepad++ does.

    Easy.

    Go to "Start"
    Click "Search"
    Click "Change Preferences"
Click "With Indexing Service (for faster local searches)"
Click "Change Indexing Service Settings (Advanced)"

A window titled "Indexing Service" will appear. The following instructions pertain to this window.

On the window's toolbar, click "Show/Hide Console Tree"

In the left pane, right-click Indexing Service on Local Machine, and then click Properties.

On the Generation tab, click to select the Index files with unknown extensions check box, and then click OK.

Close the Indexing Service window and you're done.

Now you can use the built in Windows XP search function to find anything in your PHP files, or any file for that matter.

These instructions are based on Method 2 from Using the "A word or phrase in the file" search criterion may not work
