Zen Cart help!

PROGRAMMING

Good morning coders.

A friend contacted me yesterday looking for help with her Zen cart. I told her I'd ask around, so here I am.....

here is the email I received from her...

1 - some online orders are not stored by Zencart which means there is no customer buying history, the customer does not get a receipt for the purchase and I cannot issue an invoice. Usually, the customer is uncertain if the order has been placed or not.
2 - I created a new category this week then 2 sub categories. When I had done so, the products I had put into each of the sub categories did not show (only as "new" products within the category) so I have had to upload them to the main category meantime.

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Once a year or so, I get optimistic about ZenCart and think that it really can't be as big of a PITA as I remembered it to be. So I download the latest version and realize that my optimism was misplaced.

I don't know of any open-source cart/catalogs that are NOT a PITA. OSCommerce is as bad if not worse than ZenCart.

You might look into Magento. I've never played with it, but I've heard favorable things here and there.

The biggest problem in my view with all of the above (with maybe the exception of Magento, I don't know) is that they're built on outdated technology, with terribly bloated code, and you just about have to be a rocket scientist to make any meaningful changes in the way the cart operates.

  Steve is right about bloated code, etc. I have also heard but never used Magento. I may check it out someday.
  I have been using ZenCart for years though and never heard of the problem where the orders are not recording.
  Another solution I have used and like more then ZenCart is VirtueMart extension for Joomla. It is more straight-forward then ZenCart and easier for end-users.
