i have xampp running on my computer and i am using it to self host my websites.. i was just wondering if its possible to direct any domain name to my IP so that i have a genuine looking web address..

i just dont want to pay any money to domain name registrars like godaddy and all those big guys out there.. is it possible to direct any unregistered domain to my ip..
i will give an example.. suppose xyz.com is an unregistered domain name.. i want people to be directed to my IP address when they type it in their browsers.. is there any way to do this..

One simple way is to setup your own server in your PC,And change the windows->system32->drivers->etc->host to your domain and try to transfer any free domain to your domain.
But most important your computer has some capacity and needs to be online. And setting up the virtual www in your system

No, there is no way to do that. Masterjani's solution is not going to work.

If you are after free domains, take a look at my sig.

Your best bet is to use something like DynDNS to map your router at home to an outside static domain. Isn't too complex.

Simplest option for you is to use DynDns its very easy to setup and very easy to use

First this is NOT a very good idea. Hosting your own site is a bigger undertaking than you might expect, and I suspect that if you check with your ISP you'll find that it violates their terms of service. And even if it doesn't the performance is likely to be very poor - especially with your method of hosting on XAAMP instead of simply building a LINUX box.

But if you really insist upon doing this here is what you'd do (I'm assuming you have a router here):

1 - Define a static IP for your computer, make sure it is not in group of addresses being dished out by DHCP on your router.

2 - Setup a Virtual Server (some routers use a different term like Virtual Host) and point Port #80 on the router to the static IP you just defined.

3 - Use DynDNS to define a domain name for your router. Most routers have a setting to enter your DynDNS settings to accommodate IP address changes.

4 - Do a domain redirect from the domain name you actually want to use to the one provided by DynDNS.

Again this is a really, really BAD idea, but it is doable. In this age of 6 dollar per month (that's like a whopping 20 cents a day) hosting plans that come complete with CPanels it makes absolutely no sense at all.
