the media player on the left stays in one spot while the rest of the page scrolls.

    This can be achieved using CSS position:fixed
    Just specify a top+left and the object will never move.

    If you want something that "catches" as the user scrolls down, that's done using javascript, to toggle between position:fixed, and position:static
