    My question to you is, why would you want to? Bear in mind that anything uploaded to YouTube is copyrighted, so you'd be on shaky grounds to download it, edit the movie then upload a derivative work.

    Whilst it's technically possible, I'm not really sure it's ethical, unless you have a valid reason for wanting to do this.

    Just my opinion...!

    Ethics aside, you can use a Firefox plugin like Download Helper (DownloadHelper - Media download Firefox extension) to download the YouTube videos. Make sure you grab the MP4 version which you should be able to open in iMovie.

    There are some legitimate reasons to download a video from YouTube and edit it.

    If you uploaded a video and lost the source, you might want to download it to have a copy or use in different project.

    Do you think those TV shows that show YouTube videos got permission for each one they show?

    Fair Use applies in certain situations. IANAL, but I think for educational and parodies, you can legally download and use a YT video. Also, showing a snippet in a news broadcast is probably ok as well.
