WORDPRESS GEEKS! Help Please! Creating Portfolio Database

Right guys. I've got a question regarding setting up a website.

This is not the idea of the site, but the following explanation will explain how the site will run. I don't want to share the idea. Sorry:
Let's say that I wanted to create a website using Wordpress where visitors could pay $10 to set up a portfolio. The site would be for people in the design industry, so it would cater for Graphic Designers, Website Designers, Animation Designers and so on. On their portfolio, they could upload images, videos, and add a resume as well as a multitude of contact information.
I would then need to have the option for other visitors to search the user database. For example, people could come to the site and Search for Graphic Designers in Ohio and it would show the necessary users.
I'm sure there's a way to do it just using wordpress and plugins and maybe a little bit of coding chopping and changing but for the life of me, I cannot work it out.

Any help would be great and plugins you recommend as well.

Thanks in advance for ANY help.

I think that you would need a multisite or buddypress intalled along with a membership system.

I have access to Magic Members, a premium membership plugin for Wordpress.

I looked at both Multisite and buddypress.

So in other words you want to create a site like Deviant Art but charge people to use it? You'll be hard-pressed to make this work.

DA is a very successful site and they basically control this market. Site: deviantART: where ART meets application!

No no. The Designer example is exactly that, an example, that I think a lot of people on here will be able to understand.

And I don't want to share my site idea etc.

I'm not stupid enough to compete with DeviantArt. Lol.

You don't want to share your idea, that's fine, probably smart.

But you can't be this vague and expect any degree of helpful information.

There is a price for free help.

    I'm not being vague? :S

I've explained an example idea which is very similar to my idea. The idea I explained out would have EVERY feature I require.

    I don't understand what's vague about that :S Sorry.

Could it be done? Yeah. But,

I'm sure there's a way to do it just using wordpress and plugins and maybe a little bit of coding chopping and changing but for the life of me, I cannot work it out.
    oversimplifies what would be required.

Using off the shelf plugins and tweaking a little code isn't going to give you your desired results and more likely a choppy kinda-sorta-works mash-up that doesn't work as nicely as you'd like.

If I were to tackle this kind of project here is how I'd go about it,

Let's say that I wanted to create a website using Wordpress where visitors could pay $10 to set up a portfolio. The site would be for people in the design industry, so it would cater for Graphic Designers, Website Designers, Animation Designers and so on. On their portfolio, they could upload images, videos, and add a resume as well as a multitude of contact information.
I'd start by tweaking the author page template and creating a new author type. You can create additional content fields for authors beyond what the default WP setup gives you so you could create a bio, resume, favorite movies or whatever you need. Rewrite the page so bio text is added to a bio area, graphics and videos uploaded by the author are added to a specific portfolio area, etc...

Create a custom interface that is accessible from the site itself, not the admin dashboard. This way users can login and click on a my account button and it takes them to a custom user admin page that allows them to modify and add content.

Those are really the two big pieces you need. Can all of this be done, yep. WP has a lot of power that is untapped by most themes, you just need to look at it from a CMS perspective and not as blog platform.

Wish I had some free time, sounds like a fun project.

Well don't you think that you are charging much for doing this instead of making any freeware which would be great help to the people?
