Help, upload site to host from WAMP server

6 replies
I just completed my first wordpress blog site. I was using WAMP which stores my site on my computer. I am now finished and don't know where the files save so that I can upload my site to the host. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I'm not familiar with where WAMP stores files, but here's an easy way to find out:

    Start -> Search

    Search for a file named "wp-config.php". That will point you to the folder where wordpress has been installed as that's the configuration file that wordpress uses.

    oh boy...

    The quickest and easiest way is to do a fresh install of wordpress (most hosts will have an auto-installer like Fantastico or Softalicious). Then you just need to upload the theme from your computer.

    But if you must upload what is on your computer, here's a rough guide:

    1) ZIP everything in the wordpress folder and all subfolders.

    2) Upload the zip file to your host.

    3) Unzip the file once it's uploaded.

    4) Dump your mysql database on your local computer.

    5) Import the mysql dump into PHPMyAdmin on your web host.

    6) Make sure the mysql username and password in wp-config.php match the username/password set on the web host database.

    7) Test to see if your site is running, chances are it won't be, but at least everything will be in place and you just need to fix some file permissions or database configuration.

    Again, the easiest way would be to install a new version of Wordpress on your hosting (almost every host gives you a way to do it really quickly). Then you can just upload the theme from your computer and the site will be ready. Saves mucking around with files and database dumps.
