Jquery - What is the difference? Any draw backs/issues?

Hello all, am just getting into using jquery. I have read about the $.ajax() function to process forms, but have also read about $("#mydiv").post(url, data, succes);

Am thinking that it would be quickest and easiest to have the button clicked and then run something like the above jquery snippet as opposed to the $.ajax function.

Any reason not to/any corrections/any drawbacks, etc?

Just curious.
