I figured you programmers may have an answer to this:

Ok, so I just got off the phone with Bluehost who pretty much told me use our sh*tty cheap hosting or go elsewhere... great sales process over there.

Anyway, here's the deal. This past week I added two new domains to my account (total of three now) and installed Wordpress on both. They both have OptimizePress as well. One also has Wishlist Member and SimplePress.

I have ZERO traffic to both of these sites and the only action on them are from me on the backend of Wordpress.

A few days ago I noticed both of these sites slowed WAY down. It would take 2-3 minutes for a new page to be saved when creating it in Wordpress. After staring at my computer for hours I decided to call Bluehost assuming it was a hosting issue... I was right.

The technical support guy told me my account has been throttled and put on a different server until the number of processes taking place slows down. His solution... move to a different company!

I have two questions... why is this happening and who should I move my sites to?

Atleast don't go to Godaddy.. Issues with shared hosting convinced me to buy my own server.
I hear Hostgator is ok though... but still.

This tells me that bluehost oversells their servers to the point any spike could take their services down or come to a crawl. I have no evidence other than your post but that is my assumption.

Your host has crippled your sites, there is nothing you can do on your end other than do what they "suggest" move to a different host.

I would stay away from the cheaper plans hosts provide. I usually start at reseller level hosting then go up from there as needed.

That's an issue most WP users fail to focus on. Bloated WP themes, badly coded plugins, too many queries to the MySQL database - those are the processes running in the background and those put a bigger strain on the processor than visitors.

Still, overselling is a real issue when it comes to cheap hosting, so you'd be better off moving those sites.

    Hi,

I've never had a host do that do me before, sounds bad.

Secret Unlimited Hosting - web hosting and domain registration - they're who I use. avg cust. services response time: about 16 minutes - 20 minutes - it's really friendly too. Less than $6 per month for U/L hosting too!

    Hope this helps.

When a host rents their resources too much, then everyone
starts to have issues with loading time, etc. So, if I were you,
I'd seriously pack up and leave BlueHost.

Thanks for all the responses... and I'm definitely packing up and leaving Bluehost never to return. I just need to figure out where to go from here.

Duston - you can try us out. We have a WSO here and a 30 day money-back guarantee if you aren't happy.

What the people at BlueHost told you seems a little strange for 3 blogs with no traffic. Did the plugins you were using run a bunch of processes in the background or something maybe?

Christian has a point. If your site have no traffic, why would BlueHost (or any other host) be concerned? It might be good to make certain that your sites and WP plugins are not spinning out of control processes. If you can identify that as an issue, you can alleviate potential problems with your next host and the same problems.

    Good Luck.

First of all, I don't even know what a process is! I understand it to be an attempt to contact the server but I don't know why any of the plugins I'm using would be doing that... especially when I have no traffic.

Here are the plugins I'm using: Wishlist Member, OptimizePress (Theme not a plugin) and SimplePress.

your plugins should not slow down that much I use more plugins than that and have used optimizepress also. Test another provided and see if there is any difference. I use hostgator a lot and do not have any issues

I don't know why its always blame the plugins/themes and especially in this case where your host has said that they throttled your site down - what they meant is they have throttled their server usage down because they have loaded it, simple as.

I have like 50 Wordpress sites and a good number of them have like 20 - 30 plugins and I've never had the load problem them.

The problem here is the host and their curb - I host with Heart Internet on my own reseller account and I have never had an issue and if there was their customer service is excellent. I other than that I would recommend hostgator as an alternative - none other cut it for me!
