downloading and uploading from server

7 replies
Hi Warriors

I need help from the more technically minded

The problem:

I download a lot of stuff, mainly from PLR membership sites, however when it comes to uploading said stuff to my webhost , I suffer from terrible upload speed.

How would I go about setting the downloads to go directly to my webhost ?

I have a reseller account with hostgator and a VPS with site5.

What would it cost for you to show me and do it for me as well?

Many thx in advance

Manuel

    PHP+CURL do wonders.

    with the vps you should have SSH.

    login in via ssh and use WGET
    wget 'http://domain.com/file/?search&channel=24'

    will suck whatever is at that url into the directory your in.

      Only if he is trying to grab the files from another server ;-) As I said, if he trying to upload files from a local network, then SSH is not the best way to go, plus he stated that he is not confident with SSH yet

    @WalkerJ: thanks but I am going to need a bit more info on that particular solution , could you point me to a tutorial to do just that?

    @ussher: I thought of something like that , but I have actually never done that! So will need to google how to use ssh to get started, any tutorials you would recommend?

    Many thx

    SSH is faster if you are trying to fetch files from a URL instead of your local machine.
    The wget suggestion is a command line tool which you would use in your SSH whereas Curl is used in php.

    However, if you have many files on your local machine and are uploading to server as your post seems to suggest, the fastest way to do so is to first zip all the files you want to upload into one file and then either use the hostgator filemanager or ftp. The hostgator filemanager has a nice upload button that you can use. If you dont have filemanager on your vps, then use ftp instead. Either way, do not upload files individually as doing so wastes a remarkable amount of time ;-)

    Ths guys

    to be very clear : here is my current process

    go to PLR site--->download to my machine---->modify only a few files from PLR----->upload to my server

    what I want to do:

    Go to PLR site---->download whole package to my webhost----->download only selected files to my machine for modifications--------->re upload files to my host.

    Hope this bring clarifications if needed.

    when i upload to my shared server where i dont have SSH access i find that the quickest way to get stuff up there if there are a ton of files is to do what paulpalm said.

    * download from the PLR site,
    * unzip the package
    * make your alterations
    * zip up the package
    * use FTP to upload the zip package to your server.
    * open up cpanel
    * select the FTP file manager
    * locate the zip package
    * right click on the zip package and select "extract to folder"
    * go into the folder and click "select everything"
    * move all the files to the location you want
    * delete the empty folder that the extract made.

    I have a real fast connection but that speed cant be fully utilized when there are heaps of files.

    If its something like a full install of drupal, zipped takes a couple of min at the most, but unzipped and its ten times that.

    zipping is a good idea.
