google analytics goal conversions

i am having one hell of a time making the goal conversions tracking work. I think I am doing everything correctly that I was supposed to do yet, the goals keep returning no results (although I subscribed myself to my own campaign and went through all of the steps successfully)
anybody knows how to make the goals tracking work? Or, do you at least know of a free alternative to analytics that allows tracking conversions?
