Be very careful when using CCleaner. It deleted one of my registry files, the NTLDR boot loader. This file boots the computer. I am sure it was the cleaner because I had just used it before realizing I couldn't start my system.

Luckily, I had just backed up all my files on an external drive. Otherwise, I would have lost everything. Not only did I have to reload Windows XP, but I needed to copy the missing files from another computer in the house. After several days, I finally got the computer to where I could re-install Windows.

I did some checking around the Web, and there are warnings about using this type of software. It could inadvertently delete an important file...as in my case.

I had been using it for quite some time before this happened; so I can't say you will encounter this problem. My advice is watch what it does when you run it.

I use CCleaner also and have never had a problem with it, Its a great tool to remove history, cookies and all the temporary files that are stored on your system from constant
internet use. Usually it gives you the option on what to removed and does not delete anything that you do not tell it too.

There are alot of rogue software out there disguising themselves as legitimate applications. Put out by hackers and malicious users and these are named after legitimate programs to fool us into installing them, Make sure you are using CCleaner made by Piriform, if it is of another company it could be malware. If not and you are using the original program from this company, I would report it to them so they can fix this program before it happens to someone else.

    hock1,

Thanks for the response. I don't know who made the CCleaner I used, as I assumed it was the original. I'll look at the one you mentioned.

Up until my file got deleted, I had never had a problem either.

Hey Debra, I agree with Hock1 in that you must have gotten
      a rogue .exe.

I've been using CCleaner since it was originally called 'Crap Cleaner'
and have never, ever had any problems with using it.

As a matter of fact, I had a similar problem as you had with the
NTLDR boot loader. Except mine came from a MS Update!

Was a major pain in the a** to fix, and to not lose anything on my drive.

I'm glad you found a way to fix your situation.

May be due to some other issues you have faced that kind of problem, but I feel definitely not due to cleaner, I have been using it for so long still no problem arises.
