? About using Hostgator & WordPress & GoDaddy

Hi! I'm so new to this, please forgive my stupid questions!

I have a GoDaddy domain name. I would like to use WordPress but hear that GD is slow and it's better to use an outside host. Hostgator seems really good to me and many people recommend it but I have some questions. It seems to run on this Linux OS. That's just for their servers, right? That won't in any way affect my computer, will it?

I was reading on another thread and someone said this: "*Keep in mind if you have need of a windows server for any reason you can't use BlueHost at all, but can use the higher end HostGator... but that isn't what they are best at. GoDaddy sucks at that too." ~ What does this mean? I run Windows on my computers...(I was thinking of using BlueHost too)

Also, I need to be able to add source code and from what I understand, I'll need to download the WP.org version and not the WP.com version. Is this correct? I need to do this via an FTP? Is this pretty simple to do?

Thank you sooooo much in advance for any info and answers!!!

You don't need a windows servers... The majority are linux. You don't need to know any linux to run your site...

Each host has a control panel that makes everything really easy. They both have a 1 click install for WP.

Don't worry about it, just use linux server on hostgater

    Angelovearth,

Most Wordpress sites are hosted on a Linux servers. You shouldn't need anything extra to use a Linux server over a one with Windows. If you decide to get your hosting with Go Daddy, you can one click install Wordpress and many other apps. X.co/Zmeh will have the full list of apps. If you have any other questions feel free to contact us (X.CO/WeHelp).

You do not have to bother about the Operating Systems as they provide a Control Panel and FTP for you to access things easily. It is simple to manage. It is like entering your login details for FTP and moving files folders or whatever you wish to do.

I would suggest you use Hostgator.

Stay away from GoDaddy! I have had terrible experience with them, in fact one of my clients still has a account with GoDaddy (because he purchased a 3 year plan). Their "One Click Installs" take around 2 hours to install and it's not really one click when you have to navigate through their terrible backend. Stay far far away from GoDaddy.

You will have no problem using Hostgator or Bluehost for your WordPress site. Both have easy 1 click installs for Wordpress.

THANK YOU all soooo much!!! What a relief. I'm just gonna go for it. Hostgator and WP it is!!!

One more thing though, lol, will it hopefully tell me how to somehow link my DivineEnergyFitness.com domain name to my HG...server? I was reading something about if you don't download it right, you'll have /wordpress.com or something after your domain name. How do I make sure to just have the .com and nothing more?

Thanks again for ALL your help! I'm so glad I found this site. You're gonna see me here often asking questions! LOL

When you buy the hosting package from hostgator they will also give you the nameservers that you need to enter in your domain administration panel to have your domain pointed towards your hosting account.

Then when you install wordpress from the control panel you simply install it in the root folder and that's it, www.yourdomain.com will be your wordpress site.

Perfect timing on this thread. Thank you. I've been looking today at setting up a second website. I used godaddy for the first but needed LOTS of help from a friend who said herself that I should never use godaddy again! I do want to be able to handle this myself, and godaddy just was too complicated. Anyhow, been looking at hostgater. One question - I've been thinking of just getting the hatchling package (one domain name) because right now it is overwhelming to think of managing two domains and my fiverr and my twitter.... What say you more advanced folks? Does it usually just multiply anyway? do you all have multiple websites?

You could always upgrade the hatchling plan later on when you need more than one website.

That's what I went with too...just the Hatchling plan. One .com is plenty for me!

So far so good...it's been leading me step by step so far.

Well, it WAS going good. Here's my next question. I have my godaddy domain set up to auto-forward to my online store. Is this where I go to work on WP? Do I need to reset that in GD so it doesn't autoforward?

You should not setup auto-forwarding in GD. Just set the nameservers to the ones shown in the lower left side of your hostgator control panel. Btw, what is your online store built in? Is it with godaddy? In that case, you might need to do things a bit different.

Bottom line is this folks. If you opt for the SHARED Hosting program from any hosting company you are likely to run into performance problems - as you are impacted by the behaviors of others who share that environment / server with you.

My recommendation is to ALWAYS use a VPS Hosting program (at the very minimum) when building a site that performance / response time matters. Been there done that... yes it cost a few bucks more... but you get what you pay for so stop complaining!

I have both hostgator and godaddy but I personally prefer Hostgator because it has a faster "email" server.

Other than that, they are pretty much similar.

I have had zero problems with host gator/go daddy.

Their customer service has been awesome to me. Until you're website is getting serious traffic and you decide this business is actually for you, I'd say use hostgator and go daddy.

    batads.com/gator.php

go to that url and signup for hostgator through my affiliate link if you want haha

I am agree with Unomateo, don't bother about linux servers, there are control panel which manage every thing for you. I suggest you to go with hostgator for your website.

    Best Of Luck.

Linux is by far the best platform for hosting, much better than windows. Don't worry, anyone can use a linux server as it bares no relevance to your normal computer.

In regards to using a different service such as hostgater, personally speaking I have never done that and I don't see the point of it anymore. Years ago.. maybe, but today you would have been much better off getting both your domain and hosting from Godaddy. I've always done this myself and I've never had any major problems in over 10 years. Also, you sound like your a novice so it would have been much easier for you if everything was in the same place.

What you heard about Godaddy and wordpress is absolute rubbish. I have built untold wordpress sites with godaddy and I've got each of them loading super fast. No matter where you host a wordpress site its never going to be super fast straight out of the box because wordpress needs to be tuned up with the right plugins to get it loading quickly.

The Quick Cache plugin will get your wordpress site loading fast if you configure it correctly. Plus, I highly recommend compressing all of your image files. If you do these two things your wordpress site will load as fast as any regular html site. My wordpress site does and I even have 21 active plugins which are what normally slow down a wordpress sites. Plus, its hosting on Godaddy.

One thing I will say, as a newb you might find using cPanel on Hostgator much easier than the GoDaddy hosting interface but thats only a small advantage because the Godaddy interface isn't that hard to understand either.

    Good luck.

I use GoDaddy for my site (the whosthatguru.com) and it isnt slow at all.. I don't like HostGator. I tried them but their support was pretty bad. Kept on trying to charge me for hosting that was supposed to be canceled 4 months ago. That was ridiculous.

According to my experience (I sell transfer to new host service) . Hostgator (HG) is easier to use than godaddy (GD). If you not familiar with ssh then you'll need good file manager to arrange your files. GD file manager isn't friendly with my 10 inch netbook but they have easy to activate ssh access (GD use phone activation for ssh) while HG need you to mail identification file etc. HG file manager can help me work faster with files if no ssh access since I hate to work with ftp.
So far, the combination most people use is domain at GD and hosting at HG. If you already have economy hosting that GD provide with some domain and you only need wordpress then you can continue with that. But if you plan to use or try other software that require special mod rewrite such fresh store builder then you'll need HG.

      BTW.
The reason why linux is better is because of the scripts you can use with it. If go to the godaddy hosting page and select the 'FEATURES' tab you can then compare the scripts that run on windows and linux servers. Linux has almost double.

GoDaddy also has a 1 click install for WordPress, you don't have to mess with FTP and all that stuff.

One sec, I'll get the link where I got mine from.

Your absolutly right, inside the godaddy hosting admin area theres an application button that takes you to their 'Hosting Connection' service where godaddy staff will install any of the 100's of applications and scripts for you, including wordpress. All you do is follow their wizard which will ask you to name things like passwords, user names etc etc and within 30mins its all installed and ready to use.
Some of the other more advance scripts can be a nightmare to install so having the Godaddy staff do it for you for free is a massive bonus IMO.
