Comp Help - Can't Check Other Web Sites

Hi folks,

First time thing this is happening to me. And I kind of need help.

For whatever reason, I'm unable to access practically any web site on my comp.
Oddly I'm able to access only GMail's log-in page, and I can't even pull up Google
itself only on my browser.

It's taking my own private proxy site (which only I access and use) to be able to
actually go here and post this for help. I have a feeling something added into my
laptop's system or Chrome browser that's blocking them out, but I want to know
how to possibly narrow down my troubleshooting into this.

That said, what items or "checklist" do you do if you find yourself in this? So far I
used Avira and Malware Anti in safe mode, but neither have detected anything
so far.

Oh, and just for the sake of those who might find themselves in a similar boat
as this, try to...hehe...make it as layperson english as possible. Thanks for any
assist.

    My first thought would be to see if it's a name resolution issue (i.e. DNS).

    Try pinging a couple of common site s(i.e Google, Yahoo, IBM) and see if you resolve their IP addresses or if they come back as an unknown host.
