help with malware/adware?

A pop-up window has been popping up that says "coupon browser update." The company is dropinsavings dot com. There is no contact info and the uninstall instructions are bogus. I cannot find anyone that knows how to remove it. It does not show up in microsoft security essentials and other people (in the CNET forum) have reported that it somehow flies under the radar and is malware. I found one program that claims to get rid of it - but I have never heard of them so don't trust it.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of this malware? Any help would be really appreciated. (If this is the wrong forum for this post, I apologize ahead of time.)

    I would recommend looking at some security based forums rather than here.

    However, I'd personally run a scan with MalwareBytes Anti Malware and see if anything comes up. After running that scan, I'd also recommending creating a HijackThis log and posting it on a related security forum for further analysis. However, I'm not a security professional so I'd take this advice with a grain of salt.

      I ran MalwareBytes (both quick and full) and nothing came up - I was thinking about the Hijack This so, perhaps I'll do that next. Thanks. (BTW, do you know a good security forum?)

    Could be adware that usually comes bundled with free sofware and checked by default when installing, see in your control panel, add-remove programs if you can uninstall it, good luck!

            This person has adware, not a doomsday virus.


            Also, now you're talking about reinstalling windows, which is different from reformatting. Maybe the 'software extraordinaire' should read up on some of the most basic, introductory-level software principles/understandings.

            Or sit down with a computer illiterate for 5 minutes. You'll learn more about computers than you could imagine.

      This came as a drop down box that was attached to certain websites I visit. In other cases, it may be a drop down box in Amazon or similar shopping sights, and covers about a quarter of the screen.

      Just wanted all to know, this is adware that cannot be uninstalled via the add-remove programs feature because the file is hidden. The website "uninstall" instructions are bogus. Some security sites claim it is a virus while others say it is malicious adware. In either case, the files are hidden as "game play labs" as well as about 3 or 4 other names. I used three anti-viral programs, cleaned the registry, disabled all add-ons and extensions in FF, found the hidden files and removed them. All seems to be fine now, however, I will still be creating another log with Malwarebytes and will have it checked to ensure all is gone.

      I hope no one else has to go through this - but if you do, I hope this helps.
