"back" button problem/curiosity

A question please...

What is it on some webpages that prevents a return to the prevous page when clicking the "back " button? ... something's rendering the it ineffective.

I've not particularly monitored anything (and I may be wrong) but it seems to be only when I've gone to a site right from Google.

Is it poor (or deliberate) website design/programming, or is there some setting on my machinery that does (prevents it).

Thanks!

I don't know exactly if that is what you mean, but some websites do a 301 forward from some pages, e.g., when the page URL changed but Google still has the old URL in their index. So if Google sends you to the old URL, which forwards you to the new URL. If you then click back, you land on the old URL again, which promptly forwards you to the new URL again, effectively making it impossible to get back to Google (or wherever you came from).
There's not really a way to avoid it, but in most browser you can keep the back button clicked or right-click it to be able to jump back more than one step, which might help in this situation.
