Implementing Alerts for Android (Potential Paying Gig)

I'm working on a project that could really use push notifications on the Android app. I was told that there wasn't a solid way to implement this in early 2010, so we adopted a third party (Urban Airship).
The experience is exactly as I thought it would be - underwhelming and confusing to users - who are prompting to install an extra application.
I've noticed more and more of our competitors implementing this on Android - so there must be a way to do it.
We have built our app using the Phonegap Framework and are successfully doing push notifications with iOS.
If you can demonstrate you have done this before I'd definitely be interested talking to you about helping us!
