Capstone Project - What do you need?

3 replies
I'm working on a Capstone project for my B.S. in Information Technology degree over the next 7 weeks and I want to design and then develop a software product for affiliates to aggregate all their affiliate products into one tool that has statistics, sales, and searchable products. Please reply if this WOULD this be any value to anyone. I would appreciate any help or advice.

Or if there is some other tool that you think would really help affiliates, I'd like to talk with you about it. Since my Capstone project is due in 7 weeks, I don't have much time, so the sooner the better would be very helpful on suggestions.

PM me or reply to me this thread and let me know how you need help or what you would like to see in tool that can help you. I look forward to speaking with many of you.

Thank you so much!
Brad

    I know no one here has answered, and that is okay, perhaps I'm in the wrong area of this forum because I know there are people here with lots of knowledge. However, I did get a response from an full-time affiliate marketer that I have known for some time, and he is really impressed with a tool which can help him track his statistics, products, and ads in near real-time for dozens of companies he is promoting which he pays for someone to manually do now. The following is the background portion of my implementation plan.

    =========================

    Project Background
    One of the most difficult aspects of being an affiliate is being able to track products and services which they are promoting. An affiliate can choose many products which they can promote either online or offline. Affiliates are busy people and they are always taking on more work and challenges than they can do because it is in their nature. They are always looking for a good product or service that they can sell and a good way to promote to as many people as they can. Therefore many may have a lot of affiliate programs and products to sell so keeping track of individual and total sales, click statistics, products and ads are very important to focus on what is selling and what is not. The problem is that they need to remember and track all the companies and products which they signed up to sell. This configurable affiliate web based tool will help solve that problem for all affiliates. This project will fulfill what many affiliate marketers are missing from their toolbox which is tracking, measurements, and configurable reporting in near real-time.

    Have a great day and thanks for any input you may want to provide.

      I have actually started building this same project 3 times, once in a desktop application coded in C#, then as a PHP-driven HTML application, and as a Javascripted failure project for mobile devices.

      It's not that it is hard, it's that it is exhausting. The amount of affiliate programs out there is quite exhaustive, and though the industry mainly uses only 10-14 different affiliate software solutions, there are enough in-house software suits and differential APIs built by so many different companies, not to mention the small tweaks and bits that have to be independently looked at.

      I'm not saying this to discourage you (I have a bad habbit of trying to do things people tell me I 'can't' do, so who am I to begrudge it in others), but merely pointing out that developing an application, or a website, that will interact correctly, securely, and timely with well over 25,000 other web applications is probably going to take a bit of work.

      Also, since I know many a designer who made something "knowing" that the user will go the extra mile to implement and code the features they personally want... That only works for Bethesda. Expecting the user to take care of the "little details" of integrating with affiliate software programs means that 4 of your users will actually try it, and 3 of those will be people that can just make your software from scratch, they just didn't want to.

      Now, if you do happen to make it, and it works well and smoothly, by all means I would pay very well for it, and know many people who would also. I would say something right >here< but it would be ground breaking and industry revolutionizing, but I don't want to make it right now and there's no point in giving away the future of affiliate marketing. But you're on a damned good track with your thinking sir.

    Much appreciated Nochek! Thank you very much for your truthfulness and insight. Looks like you have beat the pavement on this before. These are some big risks and constraints that the developer will need to deal with along with time consumption.

    Perhaps hitting on the most popular affiliate programs would be best initially. I was talking with my developer about this and he seemed to think it may not be as bad as I think it is. I hope he's right. Perhaps we can build the configuration into the application so that the affiliate can be in control.

    I know I'm taking a risk posting this idea and process within the forum because some people may take the idea and run with it too. Well, if they have the time and money...I guess that's okay.
