I have a word press blog and I have 31 squeeze page subdomains
I needed to download pdfs and zip file to my lists
So I got a tutorial that said "create a file in your public html"
So I did. They made me remove the example.
This worked great!
Then later I was installing a subdomain squeeze page and I put the folder in
the root diretory by mistake and my wordpress blog disappeared.
I reinstalled the blog page and saved all my work.

BUT, now when I upload a file and then test download it I get a page that
has alink that says parent directory and another link below it that is the
file name and when you ckick on it it opens the file directly instead of
giving you the box that says what do you want to do view or save

I NEED HELP! I HAVE A LIST AND MY EMAIL SEQUENCE NEEDS MORE BONUS'S

I don't work with wordpress, so I don't know if my fix will hurt it or not (but it really shouldn't).

    Create a file called index.html
inside of it write some text or put another squeeze page or whatever.
Drop it in the directory your download file is in

I don't know what your specifically trying to do, but this will keep people from directly accessing the directory your file is in, and will require you to enter the exact file path to download it.

Now let me get this straight
Create a file called index.html. Do I put this in the public html directory? upload my files below it?
    Please explain further

If you don't have an index.html or index.php file in your public_html directory, then yes, put one there. That will mean anytime someone goes to yourdomain(dot)com they will see that index file. You can then put other files in that directory for direct access.

So if you put List.txt in public_html, and your domain is yourdomain(dot)com, then the access link for that file would be yourdomain(dot)com/List.txt (which won't be downloadable unless you right click and save as, a .txt file will load in a browser automatically)
