Best PHP Based Platform for High Volume Community Site

I am looking at developing a social networking website that would function similar in function to Facebook (backend not the front end) and Myspace with a bit of YouTube function (user channels)

Expected traffic is expected to exceed 1,000,000 Page views a day within 6 months (sound like a lot, but not for the niche we are targeting and the marketing channels we have in place).

Can any experienced programmers recommend a base platform to use for such a beast. I would like to use a ready made product to get the site prototype setup E.g. PHPFOX but I do not think this will provide all the features I want or handle the traffic and security.

Any recommendations on initial Out of The Box solution to start and most important, the best platfrom and type of programming best suited to these type of websites?

Any tips appreciated

PHPFox and Elgg are the two big ones. There are many available on sf.net as well as github. In the end, you will definitely have a lot of work to tweak them to your liking.

    Yo Tman47

I have not checked out PHPfox or elgg
but I have played around with BoonEX

BoonEx is open source they have a free version of it
and i think the free version is the full version but

it still has the powered by BoonEx on your site

    but its free...

It comes with every thing you need to start out of the box
and it comes with the option to buy addons made by the BoonEx community

(you literally will be able create any social networking site you want)
i checked out a few of the add ons in the market and they are pretty good..

Let me know which one you choose and how your site turns out

With the amount of effort it will take to customize any third party software, get it legally inline with your concept, and then redo it all after the prototyping phase, you should just have it done from the ground up.

phpFox and Elgg keep their security issues logged under their "Feature Requests", which happens to be thousands of requests long. Maybe you haven't gone through the results to see what vulnerabilities exist in these systems, vulns that are documented and available for any blackhatter to use, but I have, and its scary.

Better to have an in-house script that takes a bit longer to create, at least then the only people that attack you are people that have to do it from scratch. And all that is just security. Once you start talking about the efficiency of one of those bloated software packs with all your customized code slammed on top, your talking profit loss and unnecessary server load.

If you have enough funding to produce a million hits a day within 6 months, you can afford to hire someone to do it right, and you will pay yourself back a 100+ times. Of course, 90% of all social websites don't come close to the numbers your seeing, so good luck.
