HELP - Anybody know of any simple e-Commerce Site Script/Template/Package?

Hi everyone,

I need a simple e-Commerce script/software/template/ or package

Which basically handles the following:

  • Displaying products on the site
  • Receiving & Collecting Order Details
  • Integration of Paypal for Order payments
  • Keeping customer & order details in a mysql database
  • Have a mailing list facility so that I can eMail my customers
  • Have a back-end to allow viewing of the order details.
I was thinking about hiring somebody to create such script.

But I was wondering whether any of you guys know of any script/template which can do all of this already.

Thanks,
Matt

Friends with online businesses have usually started with Zen Shopping Cart, and modified it to meet their needs.

No sense reinventing the wheel, if this is a good starting point for you.

thanks for you opinions - I don't like zencart as it seems a bit out-dated.

Coog does oscommerce have a mailing list facility? And does it allow you to log in and view orders made etc (from an employees perspective)...

Also was it easy to customise or did you have to spend $xxx on customisation?

      Thanks,
      Matthew

It has a newsletter and some other email options, Customizing is not bad if you know php. There are a number of templates out there check out the free template at templatemonster, it's pretty nice. It's pretty ugly out of the box...

Also if you want to use paypal IPN make sure to get the latest mod.

Indeed magento is nice, make sure you can meet the hosting requirements before you get started...You don't want to run this on a shared hosting account.

Hi coog, why don't you suggest that you run this shopping cart on a shared hosting account? Will it not work?

    Thanks,
    Matthew

My reading of this post leads me to conclude that you need to do more research before you move any further forward. A script and a good one that does what you want is very important. Equally important however, is how it is set up and how and where it is hosted.

I'm not going to go into detail here - but bear in mind that the more visitors that you get, the more emails or newsletters that you send out and the more products that are downloaded from your website(s) then the greater the cost to you. Traffic uses bandwidth.

If you are starting out then initially none of the above is an issue, but if you are building a business then you do not want to find that your host has temporarily closed your account due to you exceeding your bandwidth.

The bottom line is that whatever script you decide to use, make sure that you discuss the script, your requirements and your projected use of server space and bandwidth with your prospective (or existing) host.

      Regards,
      Jeff Henshaw.
