running automated software on remote server

I want to run SEO powersuite and some other white hat software on a remote server where i can just configure it and schedule it to run so it does not take all my personal computer's resources. I am not very technically savy, so I tried to get my programmer to do this for me on my VPS but he could not get it done. Can someone point in the right direction on a service that provides this or how i CAN do it on my VPS (hostgtr)..

I doubt you can do that on a VPS. Powersuite is a desktop app (not sure about Linux version though, but guess it requires a desktop too), VPS doesn't have a desktop, and it's unlikely you can manage to install a desktop on a VPS and even more unlikely you can use it there.

What about a VPS that allows you to install Virtual box and then install windows in the virtual box then running powersuite in the virtual box?

Desktops are generally too memory / resource consuming for a VPS. Dedicated server or some cloud hosting would be better, but there could be other potential issues.

Outgoing traffic of SEO programs can be too big and expensive. Google (and perhaps other engines and services which SEO software use) knows most IP addresses of hosting providers and often prevents them from crawling its' results.

Overall, isn't it easier to get another computer in a local network for all these tasks?

not sue what type of server you are using, based on what u said sounds like a windows server.

with windows server you can set the terminal services so it sticks to a single session and session doesnt restart on different logins. think you should talk to your server guys to get help on this.

"white hat software" - hmm isn't that not possible? White hat is never automated, who's telling you lies? You need content, written by humans, for whitehat. Any artificial link is not whitehat.

And second question ... why are you running a VPS in the first place? who's telling you even more lies??

Looks like by "white hat" here he means some analytics software which doesn't create any content itself (like powersuite). And what's wrong with VPS?

Buy a dedicated server (Windows) and get Remote Desktop (RDP) access to it. You can remote control a computer anywhere in the world as if it was your own.

Out of curiosity I've installed SEO Powersuite on an OpenVZ Linux VPS and it runs fine.

You'll need to install a desktop and then VNC or some other way to view the desktop over the internet. You'll also need to install Java. Make sure that your VPS is running a 32 bit operating system. SEO Powersuite only works with 32 bit OSes on Linux.

There's really nothing else to it. I'm not sure what features of SEO Powersuite would allow you to automate it though. You can surely have it run at specified intervals, but I don't know if there's any available startup arguments that would allow you to start SEO Powersuite to run a specific task. I'd have to look at the software a little more to find out.

Anyhow, yes, all you need to do is install a desktop on your VPS, and Java, and then you can run SEO Powersuite. Also, make sure you're using a 32 bit OS if your OS is Linux.

I'm not sure why you'd want to run this software on a VPS though. Dollar per dollar, you can get more processing power to run this software by purchasing a used computer off of Craigslist than you could by paying for a VPS.
