Is there away to throttle emails

Hi

Is it possible to throttle the amount of emails that go out through a vps. What it is i am using a dating script and the user can import their contacts from gmail,hotmail etc

I am thinking that if they send all the emails out at once like say 500 for instance from 1 account and i dont want the ip address to get burnt

So i am thinking is it possible to to stagger or throttle the emails on a vps

    wouldn't it be easier to do that on the script itself, rather than on the VPS?

    Then you would probably need to hire a php developer to make those changes in that script.
    Counting emails directly on the server sounds way more complicated, rather than using a count function in the script where it runs through.
