You've got tons of options... Among them:
    • Blog commenting.
    • Social bookmarking.
    • Guest blogging.
    • Forum posting (think of your signature, why do you think I have one? Ok, for the direct traffic I may get, but not only).
    • Etc...
Search a little bit here on the forum you should have no trouble finding other suggestions.

    Seb.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

If you build a really useful site - all that will come automatically. Only that little marketing will be required.

Focus on content, if your site has quality content then people will give backlinks to your site, they will refer your site.

Most of people will tell you write content, it's not bad advice but there's lots of people just like you writing good content. build it and they will come will never work anymore (unless kim kardashian tweets your site) what i did few times and it worked for me is creating tools that users can use, it can be really about anything like convert your site to pdf tool or whatever can somewhat relate to your site for example one time I had client with spiritual jewelry e-commerce site so I created tool to help users find their chakra, it was simple survey type thing the user had to answer few questions and according to the answers they can find "what is my chakra" and of course we encouraged and made it easy for the user to share the result on facebook and twitter.

Point is sometimes we have to think outside of the box and do what everyone else is NOT doing

  • Backlinking is a dangerous business now as the Google penguin has strict rules over creating backlinks and promote. So create quality backlinks and make them natural looking.

    Exactly.
And DON'T buy backlinks unless the provider has an EXCELLENT and proven track record... There are too many people selling back-link packages who are using spammy black-hat techniques, which would have exactly the opposite effect of what you're looking for. It's safer to stay in control by creating your back-links yourself.

There are unnatural ways to get natural links.

Have a contest/blogathon. Get people to link-build for you.

Publish thoughtful reactions to posts by other bloggers in your niche. And link to them, so they see the trackback. You'll see that some of them start linking to you.

Post your best linkbait content to the social bookmarking sites where they'll get the best response. Find the right subreddit, with a good balance between relevance and usage. Post any arcane technical stuff to Hacker News.

Get access to your old college web hosting account and create a resource for your niche on a .edu domain. And link to your site, of course. This is not natural, of course, but it can be done in a way that can only be interpreted as such. Avoid any obvious cross-linking or reciprocal linking schemes, but consider using Fiverr or any low cost link building service to build cheap but not-too-spammy links to the resource.

Post comments on blogs. Naturally. On relevant blogs and blog posts that you genuinely want to read. Use your actual first name. Put the URL to your homepage in the URL box. Don't link to any page in the actual comment unless you can confidently say that people will click the link and thank you for sharing. Make the post incredibly useful. Add value.

You can do the same for forums. Put your link in the signature. Never post blog comments to build links, and never post forum comments to build links. Do it because you genuinely want to engage with the website and add value to the discussion. Or get your own questions answered.

Post guest posts on high-quality, relevant blogs. But don't do it for the link. Do it, again, to actually add value to the conversation and reflect on ideas that interest you. And to boost your ego, of course.

If you plan on keeping the site for the long run, avoid article marketing. Besides high-quality guest posts on high-quality blogs, of course. Article marketing is the free-for-all links page of the day. If you've ever installed the UAW plugin, you know that (for the most part) this is not quality content. And these are not quality sites, because they're posting this terrible, short, spammy, unoriginal content.

You have to make a distinction between trading and investing. Are you looking for quick results so that you can flip the site for a quick buck? Maybe buying links is for you.

If your website is a vehicle for generating long-term passive income, be very cautious about your backlinking practices. Google isn't getting any dumber.
