Programming or Website Development

I think you should first just focus in learning how to program and then on how to make money. HTML is a good way to start it is very easy and quick to learn.

Then from there you can move on to some more powerful programming language (HTML is not really a programming language) such as python / php / js etc

If you need to learn something for sake of earning money, I dont think it will be successful, Because learning programming is a big job. Just go through the field and then make yourself love it.

I must say that If you are versatile then you become millionaire.. All languages are important. If you two to three kinds of languages knowledge then you easily earn lots of money.

To make the more money, first we need to analyze the things or business plan (What is the demand of public which will make good sale) once you done with it then you can choose any programming language to make it live.
I am completely agree with Stiffon that hiring good company would be the best solution to get the things done.
Also from my point of view, if you go with website development then its marketing would be most important area through which you can get good leads or hits to your website.

Yes, if you want to learn programming languages then you should start it from HTML and then others too. Once you have a command on all languages then you will become a millionaire as rose mark said.

Go to freelancer and odesk. You can tell which one of the 2 options is doing well. Look at successful people on there and see what they're doing

Programming can be lucrative if you are good and can manage clients, but you will be limited by how much time you have. As a business owner you are not limited in this way and can expand as big as you are able.

You really need to get specific about what you are trying to achieve, and don't get blinded by shiny dollars.

Well, there is never too late to start learning programming. My suggestion would you to first focus on Programming and then come to web development.
There are several benefits of learning programming and you'll never feel bored. You will learn to solve complex concepts and develop Problem solving skills in the process.

Start from C and then move on to Python or Ruby.

If you are looking to build a game you should check out GameMaker. You can start out very small and build nice games without any real programming knowledge and then build on your skills by learning the GameMaker programming language to build more complex games. There is a free edition you can download and install and build real games with to see if you like it.

I've been in programming for over 16 years in languages from Assembler to C# but I started my son out with GameMaker.

If you are wanting to build websites for money you can start out with a program called Artisteer. It is a fast, easy to use template builder that can build full HTML websites as well as great looking templates to Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, and other content management systems. While you won't learn programming going this route you can build good looking websites this way.

You will need to learn to understand and program HTML and CSS to be truly successful in building websites but starting off in Notepad writing raw HTML from the ground up is a major waste of your time.

camchin, consider simply doing whichever you enjoy the most. When passionate about your work, you're going to have a much easier time making money out of it.

To be honest, programming is a big part of web development, so the 2 roles go hand-in-hand. Web developers are programmers. Coding is coding. Once you learn one complex language and get good at it, you'll be able to pick up on others in relatively good time due to them sharing the same kind of fundamentals. To be a good programmer or developer, you need to be good at more than just a single language these days anyway.

If you really want to know what's most lucrative (will make the most money), look at the markets that are hot. Mobile devices, mobile apps, Facebook games... these are HUGE earners. For example, 'Draw Something' took 6 months to build and it turns over $250'000 per day, and was sold for $200 million. But keep in mind that success stories like that come from people that are passionate about what they work on, not people that are just looking to make the most money.

My advice: learn Java, and get good at it. You'll be able to go into most areas of programming or development from that point on. With Java, you can develop powerful apps and games for mobiles, computers, and the web. You'll also be able to pick up on other languages a lot quicker at this point.

Years ago, jobs used to be advertised in the newspapers. I chose what my next specification would be by going through the ads and counting the number of openings for a certain position. Then, I looked at the average salary that was being offered. Oracle was #1 so I went with that. Of course, things are different now. I would almost be careful of some areas because on ODesk, there are folks who do good work (in something like Unix administration) for sometimes what equates to $4 per hour. But then again, you can download Unix from just about anywhere. I still work with it as a *base* (since so much else depends upon it) but when it comes to the resume, Oracle is what I emphasize.

So, as someone has said, keep in mind how easily accessible the skill is.
