learning python and want to know behind the scenes for seo tools.

Hi,
I have started to learn python a few weeks ago and
now I would like to try out a few codes and make some tools as an exercise.

Now, I want to create simple tools which can do keyword research
or can find page rank or find the number of links that a domain has.

I know there are sites that can already do this.
What I want to know is how these sites are doing tthis.
what is their flowchart or work process that they use to arrive at the result
I want to know the process and then create a similar tool myself.
Not looking to sell.
I just want to learn the workings of it and building the tool
will help me to learn better.
