Why do you need this ? Unless you have many new ideas to add to facebook, I don't think you'll be successful . People won't use a new similar website when facebook is already there, you have to make something much better if you want to be successful

I agree with programmerscott . They can just create a page on facebook . I don't get It how your site is going to make a better network for them than facebook . Facebook is like a god in Social Networking

Come on people, have some creativity . You are just copying ! I am 100% sure that at least 1000 other people tried to copy facebook, but none of them were successful . You must have something to be different from the others

Yep .. dont copy a site .. improve one .. FB did improve MySpace .. by making the persons profile / (now timeline) .. nice and clean instead of all crazy like myspace was. They also added the 'like' feature .. one of the most successful things ever.. and the 'wall'

For example, today FACE BOOK did ban me. They do not like me. Having your own site gives you more control and power. Also, there are other reasons. BTW, more power to you.

I agree - another facebook would be boring and been there done that.
Facebook has changed so much over the years that it's hard to say "How did he do that" -- it's a multiple of steps which involve vast amounts of testing and trails

If you're expecting a lot of traffic, you're going to need a heavy-duty server to give anything like the performance that people expect from Facebook and the like.

As you said you were looking for open source, I'm guessing your budget is limited. I would personally look at creating a prviate group on Facebook or LinkedIn.

The other advantage to that is that many people already have an account on those platforms and it's MUCH easier to get people to stay within an existing site than to get them to sign up on a new site.
