Should my apps be web based or machine based?

Hello,
I am debating something. With everything going online, would it make sense to learn web programming? HTML and php/MySQL are no brainers. But when it comes to apps that are heavyweights in terms of requirements, which language would be best , for lets say, a browser based mmorpg? Would Java, python, C#, or something else be better for server side games and applications? Thanks

    I would say Flash+Unity combo.

Unity has been into the market for some time now and is a well known platform to develop games which have a flash extension and allows you to create browser games really easy.

Silverlight is also a pretty solid option but I would not personally recommend it as MS is discontinuing it.

HTML+Javascript+php yes, plenty of games with just that like Mafia, Travian, etc.

I guess what I am saying is that when offline apps go online, which language will be best. Like for instance, if I wanted to run an fps online, what language would be best?

Or some powerful program like that (not per se a game)

A browser-based game would be best in some plugin-related language most probably (e.g. flash, java).

In terms of normal applications, the 'in thing' is to produce applications as services these days (see SaaS). For many reasons, such as the ability to sell subscriptions, keep source code in a single protected location and roll out upgrades instantly. Client-side apps are still good, but many businesses prefer software as a service these days, often on cloud platforms.

Ok, so it seems java would be best in that category. Thanks
