Installing a forum script on 1&1 but need help...

Hey Guys,

I have a website that sits on 1&1's platform and would like to install a forum script, however, their databases does not all me to simple create a sub-database and run the script. It is requiring that I have the database/table information prior to installing it.

I'm not a tech guy but have installed tons of other scripts on other platform and have never seen anything like this before.

I've tried discussing this with tech-support but they seem to know less than I do.

Right now I'm considering switching from 1&1 to another platform.

Any suggestions???

That would be a smart move!

The typical 1&1 package really isn't designed for serious web sites, it's more of an "introductory" package. I still have some stuff hosted with them that I created back in my "early days" but I'm in the process of moving that too. Your tech support experience with them is typical from my experience.

I take it you need to do more than just create a new MySQL database? Even their low-end plans had the facilities to do that, although some were limited to only allowing a few. I have to confess I'm not sure what you mean by "sub database", and that scares me as I was employed as a database analyst for 4 years!

Hostgator is a good choice, both for having a standard set of features with a CPanel and having good customer service.

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for getting back to me. For a minute 1&1 had me thinking it was just me not knowing enough.

I have an account with another company that give me 1 main acount name for MySQL and then allows me to add databases under that name. No tables required.

When I install scripts on this platform I simple type in the database information, password etc and the script writes the tables for me.

I'll definitely shift my accounts knowing this. their tech support is horrible.

Im a 1and1 customer and havent ever had a problem setting up multiple databases. Im on the business package. Its just simply a matter of going into my account, selecting mysql administration, then click the "new database" button. This gives you a new database/user/password and a phpMyAdmin instance within a few minutes. Im hosting several db driven sites with them this way.

I'm also a 1 and 1 customer but won't be for long. However, like rocketsites said from within a business account all you have to do is select the right menu option and you can create multiple databases. I have a cron job running that goes through all my databases and automatically backs them up. I think most people are used to "cpanel" so 1and1's backend will different but I didn't find it any more or less difficult to use. Also they have toll-free phone support so a rep should be able to walk you through the process if you are still having trouble.

However the one thing about the account is that they have a size limit on MySQL databases that you might want to keep in mind. Most other hosting companies allow you have as much space as your hosting package can sustain.
