Stay with VPS or go Dedicated?

Currently I'm with Hostgator on their VPS level 9 and it seems I'm maxing out the resources available.

I'm using CPV Lab and running a ton of traffic through it so it's the main cause.

They recommend that I move to dedicated but I wonder if this is something I need to do or is there a way I can better optimize my CPV Lab to run more efficiently.

What do you guys think?

Step 1. Get out of hostgator
Step 2. Move your VPS to a reliable, and scaleable, VPS company.
Step 3. Once on a new high quality host, determine if an upgrade to VPS is actually required.

This is good advice right here. And from what I've read on the CPV Lab web site, I think they would also agree....

There's huge variation in the performance of VPS from different providers. One company's highest plan might perform like crap compared to a better companies lowest plan. On Webhostingtalk, an authority on such matters, I've seldom read good reports on the performance of hostgator VPS.

You might find that another provider, for a better price even, can give you better performance than Hostgator is. On the other hand, nobody here can really say why you're getting bad performance, and you may just need to change your setup a bit.

For what you're paying for your VPS, you should be getting outstanding performance at that price.

I just realized that CPV lab was referring to shared hosting when they said you shouldn't use Hostgator. Regardless, Andrew H is right, Hostgator is not known as a good VPS host and you could easily get more performance for your money ($209.95/month?) somewhere else.

Probably the best or only way to know which hosting solution is going to be best for you is to test different providers. I'd bet you'd be happy with something from Linode. They have a 7 day money back guarantee. Lots of providers let you take their service for a test drive. During that time you can test your application on their hosting product and choose the one which serves you best.

Well indeed, giving the tool you are using a level 9 is fairly high. Is it a memory outage related issue?

You can see in the sales page of CPV Lab that 2 providers are expressively not recommanded, including the one you are using.

So indeed, it would be better to look for a better provider, with a custom set up to optimize your VPS so it can run smoothly on a lower budget.

Dedicated server is always a good solution when it comes to this type of sites. The most important thing is to find a reliable hosting provider.

What "resources" are you maxing out? We need a little more info on how the server is configured and what all it's running.

Just because you have a lot of traffic hitting this server, it doesn't mean that's the problem.

Are you on of those people that tries to put 123456789 sites on a $10 Hostgator plan?
In other words, is that the only site?

I see you have a VPS with HG (more than $10), but they're not a respected VPS host.
That's a "me too" product with them.
Use a better VPS host like LiquidWeb, MediaTemple, JaguarPC, etc
There's quite a few, and Hostgator is nowhere on that list.
