Do I actually own my site

Hey I want to use this dating site script. When I buy a copy of the software I know I am buying a license to use the software and not the license itself.

However, if I'm downloading the software and instilling it on my own server do I actually own my site even though I am using their software?

Can they just come along and tell me what I can and can't do with my site because they made the software but I am using it? Do they have some type of domain or control of my software when it is on my server (hostgator)?

Can they force me to pay for something like an update or anything they feel in order to keep my site up and running because they made the software or make my take it down if they feel so?

I don't want them to have some type of control over me or my site after I purchased the software and I am hosting it on my server. I just want to get a better understand of how buying a copy of a software works.

Note: it states that it is open source not proprietary.

Thanks for any help?

It all depends on what their licensing terms are (and licensing terms can vary greatly, even among "open source" products). When you use their product, you agree to their terms. So look on their site for a 'Terms of use" page (or something similarly named). And if you don't understand the terms, then just contact them and ask them about it.

    The licenses agreement said this:

You may use the open code of the software product for personal purposes only: for making necessary modifications in the software product or adding necessary functions. Selling, licensing, giving away or otherwise distributing the open code of the software product in full or its scripts (parts) is prohibited. Nor may you use this source code, in full or any script (part) thereof, as part of another program that you either sell, license, give away, or otherwise distribute via any method.

of course they do, that's what licensing means. You need to pay to use any licensed software.

    You own your site.

You can use their software in accordance with the license.
