Hey there programming geniuses

I suck at making websites, designing, making an email list etc.

... but I want to learn it, 'cause I need it.

Can someone tell me where should I start?

What I know?

- I can make a website with Web Page Maker, I know some basic HTML, I know how to upload all that to my hosting... and that's all I know about programming.

What I want to know?

- how to make an email list, how to design website's to look better and more.

So can you please recommend me something to start with?
Thanks,
Jack

For making and designing websites, go to a site like psdtuts.com or nettuts.com
If you want to learn actual programming, like PHP w3schools.org has great tutorials
For making an email list, you could signup to a mentoring program or an online course.

You could just use wordpress. THere is so much stuff you can do and it is mostly WYSIWYG stuff.

Getting into programming can be tricky. Some people pick it up while others (me) don't. I would get started using wordpress. You will have to make some changes to themes, etc and this will give you a way to start learning. IMO

Yeah, wordpress is great. I'm also playing with Joomla at the moment and like the look of it a lot better than the wordpress sites I have up. Not sure which one wins on the search engine friendly side of it though.

Not sure what programs you have on your machine, but I've had dreamweaver on my box for years now and have always used front page due to a little familiarity. Thought I didn't have time to learn dreamweaver. I just decided last week to go through the tutorials on dream weaver and I've learned alot. What a concept, huh? Now that I look back, I didn't have the time not to learn what I've picked up in the last week. I've already saved myself around $300.

      Where to start?

Depends on what kind of site you want.

Figure out your resources and available time your willing to spend. By resources I mean software. Find a tutorial on that said software and go through the whole thing, and you will have learned enough to really screw things up for the programmer you hire in the future!

One of the most important things to realize IMO of course, is the difference between web design and web development.

Wow - that's a big question. Depends on what you are going for as far as programming is concerned. If you want to get into the actual coding part, you'll need to learn PHP or ASP (maybe both), depending on platform. Then there's JavaScript, AJAX, SQL for database apps, etc.

I'm lucky - started programming professionally in 1970 and grew up (literally) with all the different technologies. I agree with others that suggested to go with WordPress. Learning how to develop production quality software takes a lot of time and motivation. Not trying to discourage you, just thought you'd like to know what you are up against.

I think it will be better to decide what you want to be? a developer or designer or something more specific...of course only if you want to make a living out of programming..

or if you are just trying to build up a website for a business purpose...use various CMS's - WP and Joomla are the best ones...and you will get all the extensions required...and as you said you know some basic HTML, so it won't be a problem...just learn some PHP in w3 schools...
But i think you must be knowing some of that stuff...

If you want to learn some core programming...i mean application developement...in Java..let me know...

    Happy Programming...
