IPN paypal and paydot com

Hi, Does anybody know the answer to this,
I have recently set up a product and put it onto paydotcom to process payments through a paypal account.

After scrolling through all the settings on paydot I noticed there is a space for "PayDotCom Custom IPN Script location", So I checked out what this meant.

As I understand this script is used "basically" to cross reference a db ( which paypal will write to on a valid transaction ) so that you can be sure that paypal has cleared the transaction before someone can download a product.

I also read that you can see the end ( download ) URL in the address bar and page source, before the transaction (not so) at least not in Firefox.

I tested the whole process without the IPN and I cant see how someone can get to the download page without actually pressing the paynow button on paypal, nor is the page referred to in the source of the pages prior to this payment.

So my question is do I need the IPN and if why.

    There are various uses for IPN (immediate payment notification) including the option of writing to a database if you wish.

    I use it for clients to ensure that digital products are only supplied to those whose purchases complete successfully. If you do not use the IPN functionality then there is no way to ensure that a downloadable product is delivered to those whose payment has a 'completed' status.

    It is also useful providing functionality such as the ability to send a purchaser instructions via email on how to obtain their product etc. Many purchasers close their browser after completing their payment and never see instructions etc. I've seen it on many occasions.

    Please also note that Paydotcom's IPN process is somewhat different from Paypal's.

    i would stay clear of paydotcom, i used to use them for my affiliates in till they screwed me over. i was using paydotcom w\ paypal for my transactions.
