Will duplicated content on every page hurt my rankings?

Hello warriors,

I'm about to start promoting an e-book on one of my websites. There are about 50 pages on the website and each page has about 1000-2200 unique words. Now Im thinking about adding an extra div-tag below each article with a sales text (180 words) in which i promote the book. This means that all my 50 pages will still have their unique content but also an extra 180 words that are "sitewide duplicated".

What do you guys think about this approach? Will it hurt my rankings? I have seen websites with this amount of words (about 200 words) sitewide in the right or left column. The diffrence in this case is that it will be below each article body.

I worried about this in the past when duplicate content issues were being talked about all over the place. My company's site had to put LONG legal disclaimers on every page in the footer and I decided that the best way to be safe about it was to make the duplicate content text into an image.
Sorry to say, but I don't have any proof that it "saved" us from being penalized, but we didn't get hurt by duplicate content issues and I could sleep easier not worrying about it.

What planet are you people on? This is just the most foolish reply in this thread,
      although many were top candidates.

This has nothing to do with duplicate content, either the kind that gets you
penalized, let alone even being considered as duplicate content.

You people live on a different planet. Come back to earth and start using
the internet, visiting big sites like amazon, google, zillow, gasbuddy,
      ebay, yahoo, ....

Consider kayak. The top site that's up and coming for travel deals....and
yet, it has nothing but duplicate content. How on earth could that be?

I think some of you people above need to go and apply to help out some of
these big websites and their duplicate content issues. They would be very
glad if you helped them become legit websites. Maybe a site like amazon.com
could actually become successful with your help.

So it's not considered as duplicate content if the text is "everywhere" as long as it's on the same domain? Does this mean that Google don't care if I add the same little sales text to pretty much all my websites pages?

Sure that will hurt you, atleast make sure you make it unique. It will be considered as a duplicate content. Other option would be like having very less words probably 25 words.

I would avoid doing this, instead simply put it on your best trafficed pages and then on the other pages force people to visit the high traffic pages to get into the funnel to your ebook.

Pretty tough to answer with any more than a blind guess without knowing how much of each page is duplicate site wide.

I would say that 180 duplicate words per 1000 word article is a little too much but at 1500-2500 words that percentage drops significantly. Then it boils down to the rest of the text on the page.

I would be inclined to play it safe.

It might be better all round to direct them to a squeeze page at the end of each post. Get them on your email list and then try and sell them your book. Or at least direct them to a page on your website that does the job of trying to sell your book, rather than duplicating a sales pitch on every page.

That's not really duplicate content, no different than a author Bio. or similar site wide static message.

Thanks for all the input guys! Really appreciate it!

I really would like to try to have a little sales pitch on each page so I guess I have 3 options to try.

    1. Make the sales text smaller (about 100 words) so its 5-8 % of the total content on each page.

    2. Use an image with the sales text.

    3. Keep the 180 words, but put at least 50% of the words in an image.

Since the duplicate text will only make up a small percentage of the main text on the page, the chances that it will cause any issues are very low. I'd use the image option as Google cannot read text in an image. That should eliminate any risk involved.

      Thanks for the answer.

I still don't know what to do. Using an image is pretty bad for the user experience, especially for blind people.

Hey friend. Yes it will hurt you Google Ranking. You shouldn't use duplicate content for your website. It may be very harmful for the website and search engine will consider it as a copy content. Google may take action against your site, up to removing it completely from their results if they feel you are trying to manipulate search results

Honestly, I don't think this will hurt your rankings, you are using a div below each article, which is the same thing as author-descriptions on a blog!

Have you noticed how on many blogs (even those with high rankings), under each article, there's a little box with the author's bio? I assume you're going to do the same thing, right? Maybe 180 words are a bit too long for a description, but don't worry about your rankings, you're only posting this text on your website, not spamming other websites.

I suggest you to put that content in .JPG (Image based format) so it will keep in a sense of promoting as well as SEO Friendly. As site-wise same text can become problem somehow.
