Hello!

I am just checking out my webmaster tools stats for one of my sites.

I've notice that It says one of the keywords is in the average position "5" in search results, but upon going to google and looking for the page in the google index, it's nowhere to be found on the first 10 pages.

Is someone able to help me with what this means?

What you see in the search results is not the same as what everyone else sees around the world.

Along with what Mike said earlier, WMT is very slow at updating data. The data you see could have been posted to WMT days/weeks ago which won't always sync with the live SERPs depending on competition & your own SEO efforts.

In other words, don't lose any sleep over WMT data. The live SERPs is what matters.

The best you can do is close all browsers, clear your history (CCleaner) & use an incognito browser to see the SERP position of your pages. Even that is semi flawed considering traffic won't be clearing their history & Google will serve some personalized SERPs to traffic based on each indvidual unique traffic browser history and/or GEO location. Then you have mobile search results which can throw a wrench in WMT data.

Whatever is there in webmaster that is not the instantly tracked ranking. Secondly the average ranking does not all the time shows up the exact one.

Webmaster tools gives you an average from all the query results impressions your site saw. Because of personalized search, geolocation, etc., you will individually see different results.

Try logging out or using incognito mode on your chrome browser to get a more accurate result of what the average Google user will see.

    Hope that helps!

Search results vary from the different countries. For example it maybe number 5 in google.com.uk but not in google.com.au or something to that extent.

Average position is just what it is - average. If I say the average temperature in a certain country is 19°C, that doesn't mean the temperature is 19°C all the time. Same goes for the average position.

I'm aware of that, that's why I looked in the first 10 pages as opposed to the first two.
I haven't seen any traffic from that, so I'm just going to assume that the webmaster tools rank is incorrect. Thanks for the replies.
