Hello fellows....
It's my first post to the forum and hope i would be answered. I have read somewhere that one should avoid guest blogging so does the Google says the same. But let me know the free blogging sites like wordpress, bloghi and blogspot. Do you think that posting content and the links on these sites would harm the rankings as i have been posting on these sites from 3 to 4 months?

Secondly do you think that social bookmarking has also caused the penguin penalty?
Third question is do you think that syndication still lives as i have read in more than once that duplicate content posting is among the reasons of the penguin penalties.

I hope i would have some expert opinions and suggestions...

I'm quite new on the forum so hope I can help.
I have been doing manual social bookmarking and it's not harmed my website at all.
I don't know about guest blogging harming rankings but why would it? It's a completely normal way of advertising a website I think.

    Duplicate content though, stay away!

    cheers!

    Hi Baramair,

As brianfishfish says, social bookmarking won't harm your website but I would add that social bookmarking could harm your site if it was carried out using software or if it was done with the emphasis on "blackhat SEO" eg using software or paid services.

As your post title is "Penguin 3.0 victim" you might want to explain a bit more about how you did your social bookmarking. Don't worry, we won't judge though!

    Cheers,
    Paz.

Be it social bookmarking, directory submission, forum posting or blog commenting..... all these work if they send relevant traffic to your site, if visitors are coming from a relevant place, passing some time on your website, your website will get the benefit from SEO...

IF they link to your site.. and IF their site has authority and metrics. Two pretty big 'If's if you ask me

Mate, the exact methods you just described are the types of links that cause problems.

Social bookmarking, aka pligg links, are one of the most notorious links targeted by Penguin. Web 2.0's from junk domains you mentioned? No, those aren't good either. One Wordpress.com link is fine, but those cool link pyramid (triangle, circle, baloon, [insert dumb name here]) are what killed your rankings with the penguin update.

Google will continue cracking down on those methods with each refresh and update, guaranteed.

      Thanks to all for replying.
I have got the point that posting on the wordpress, blogpost etc sites do not harm to my site. But what about the social book marking as some are in favor of it and others disagreed with it.....I am too puzzled......Some said that why not post you blog on other sites too to spread it to inform each and every person of the industry and some say that duplicating the same article or blog on other sites may harm the rankings....

its the difference between pigging out on fast food or just having a bit every once in a while - if you have blasted tons of social bookmarks to your site this probably did more harm than anything else - if you have a few that probably contribute to some decent indexing of your pages then thats probably ok -

having blogs on free blog sites up with contextual links for yourself can be good too - obviously so long as its not abused! you see where this is going?

The manual submission that looks not natural will ever count and spam and google tactfully find it to penalise.

First of all we should not do any activity for the sake of backlinks and this time I feel that penguin is targeting those site who are using web 3.0 just for back-link purpose, using exact back link for ranking and high keyword density content..

You should remove all exact anchors text back link and change it to the branded one ..

Web 2.0's and bookmarking websites are probably the worst links you could build with Penguin. I would make a suggestion to remove those links at this point. It could prevent a penalty.
