WordPress Posts vs Pages

Hello warriors,

I was wondering, many people say that important content should be on a page, and "chit chat" should be a post.

Why is that so? I know commenting can influence SEO, but if you disable the comments what is the difference between the two?

Why I ask this is because posts go into categories it is eaier to make a wordpress blog more user friendly. I don't want all of my content to be on pages!

    Posts just go in reverse chronilogical order while pages are laid out however you arrange them (hierarchy etc).

    I think important content refers to the main parts of your blog (Home, Contact, About us, Privacy Policy) while posts are the info that you want to fill your blog with that relates to your theme/niche.

    It's just easier to categorize posts.

      I know that, but many marketers say important articles should be a page because it is better for SEO... WHY???

        Because important articles attract more readers and visitors and hence they should be separately placed.

        But I dont see any major benefit from SEO point of view for this.

        I think whoever told you that had wrong information. I don't believe there's any super secret special coding in pages that makes it better for the search engines.

        I could also be wrong but I've never heard of that before

          post and pages are NOT EQUAL

          posts appear in the RSS feeds which you can ping and/or submit to directories for link backs

          I believe WP now has a plugin where you can include the pages in the RSS feed

    Have always seen posts as fresh content and pages as more static in WP.
    And searchengines loves blogs for fresh content. They crave it.

    an interesting discussion, i will test this out by building some back links to a post and some to a page to see if htere is any difference

    While I've also seen nothing definitive on this, posts are actually likely to be more SEO effective than pages.

    This is because, if you're using Categories and Tags effectively, posts will be more heavily cross linked than pages. You can improve that even further by adding a Related Posts plugin.

    However, pages will appear in your menu bar so if you have some information or an article that you want to keep in front of people a page is a way of doing that.

    For example, I have a page called Tools and Resources and another called Top Articles. The first gives brief reviews on products I'm promoting and the second contains links to popular or important posts that I think people may be interested in, even though some were written quite a while ago.

    But certainly on my blog it's posts that figure in the search engines and draw the visitors - not pages.

          I would say a page is for something major some sort of a mainstay article on the site while post is more for blogs and SEO.

          here's why, and it's a little bit advance for most ppl here

          tags are links
          if you write a post...then put 9 tags to the page then you have 9 links going out

          you have just diluted the strength of that page

          Keeping the strength of a page/post is sending more links in..not sending links out.

          Also, using archives, categories, and tag pages is also duplicate content

          domain.com/seo-rocks/
          domain.com/tag/seo-rocks
          domain.com/category/seo-rocks
          domain.com/07/2009/seo-rocks
          domain.com/seo-rocks/comment-page-1

          that's 5 pages of the same content..and Google will pick 1 page out of the 5 to index
          it will normally be the tag page if you have use the same tag in a lot of posts ...giving it more authority than your blog post.

          tag/archives/categories are not supposed to be indexed
          the purpose of these is for the users not for the robots or search engines.
          they are used to help your users find pages when they use the search function on your page.

          if you have 9 tags on every post...then you are leaking juice


          i would recommend that you do read on this before declaring it 'inaccurate and misleading'
          it only makes you look like you dont know what you're talking about.

    The comment makes it possible for you to get higher traffic. I have seen some blogs that off their comment portion but i dont think there is any advantage in doing that.

      comments is good because it's an added feature to help add content on the page, and it keeps the freshness of the post alive in the SERPs

    Posts are for fresh content that can be updated 1 to unlimited times per day, week, or month. The search engine loves it, especially if your content is updated frequently. However, pages are static they rarely change unless you are adding something to your "about me" page or perhaps "contact us" page. Comments are always good to have on a blog. They make the blog more interactive and personable.
