I think ahrefs[dot]com is the best. Plus what Surajrai mentioned above, backlinkwatch[dot]com is another great free tool that you can check your backlinks.

Both Ahrefs and Majestic SEO are not very good free backlink checkers as they only show limited data.

Ahrefs is the best of all the backlink checkers mentioned here so I urge you to give it a try. It's discovers new links really fast and removes deleted ones at the same rate. To leverage it well, you'll need a paid account. Second best is Majestic SEO.

I recently found a new back link checker tool openlinkprofiler.org/ for me it is better than ahrefs because you can check more than one domain and it shows you how much influence each back links has in % this is very handy if you want high quality back links.

I used use ahrefs to check my websutes before, it is a really good backlinks checker, but i threw it away last, because of it has limit and i should pay for it if i want more.
To the people who is doing seo, a professional backlinks checker is essential, so i find http://siteexplorer.info to replace it. this tool is similar with ahrefs, they are so good at checking backlinks, but the difference is that the one i said is free and no limit, it is just like a perfect ahrefs.
