Increasing of ranking stopped

I have a good ranking site. I rank for many long tails. I used only high quality guest posts and other quality links.
The problem is that I can't rank on my main keywords. I'm about position 10.
I get about 10 much more high quality links these weeks, nothing happen. Now I found only that my site dropped for its main keywords.
OK, my site was in penalty, but now it seems it is fully recovered. It ranks on first positions for so many keywords and gets very good traffic.
What can be the problem?
I update regularly with high quality content.
There are sites before me that are not much more that me. In fact I'm much more better then them. I men not only my site and content, also my links.
Do I have to continue getting premium authority links, or to stop and only continue updating, hoping that some day I'll rank on my main keywords.
I planned to get some premium links like mashable and so on, what is your advice? There are many sites with these links, that do not rank well.
