To tag, or not to tag, that is the question!

I was given some advice that I thought may make sense-

It was to only include a Meta TITLE in the Theme SEO settings, but to leave the description blank so that Google could pull the relevant section of the page for the search result.

I was also told to not use TAGS, because that will limit what posts are found for, vs allowing google to determine what is relevant on the page.
It feels really ODD to not include tags, since I had been since 2006!

Also - are on-page factors super important? Or again, should I go the 'natural' route and let google determine?

But what do you SEO experts say?

Should I follow this line of advice - or go all crazy on on-site seo factors and definitely tag?

That title tag is not a meta tag. Meta title has not been used in 20 years...

If you mean meta tags, they are essentially useless for SEO if one is
    talking about keywords and description.

Tags (for blogs, etc.) are other things, used to link articles together of
the same topic or group. Again, pretty much useless for SEO. You
tagging an article on bubble gum does not mean anything if you tag it
under mesothelioma. And if you tag it as bubble gum, what's the use?
Use those sparingly. Search engines cannot possibly use those to determine
what an article is about. That's why google stopped using meta keywords
and description for ranking/relevance. Too much abuse.

There is no such thing as natural in that respect. I mean seriously. You
are going to write an article on student loan consolidation, but make any reference
a secret? Just let google decide what the article could be about?

Adding a title, h1, etc. is just good writing. Has nothing to do with natural.

How could you possibly read a newspaper or magazine without such things
to tell the reader what they are getting into.

You people have taken natural to a whole new level.

    • Didn't mean meta title - not using html. In wordpress.
I am using on page factors - but not going crazy with bold, underline, italics etc - but def using Title h1 etc.

I was specifically speaking of 'tags' as in the post tags.
      Are these still important?

I understand that the 'meta keywords' are different. Are you saying that is what we should not bother with, but keep using the post 'tags'?

When you search in Google like

        site:yourdomain.com

Mostly categories, tags come first, also according to my experience tags rank well in Google ---- letting you use one more keyword to get more visitors...

So, it has SEO benefit, also good from users' experience....

But if you overly use tags, will harm you... so please don't use too many tags in one post.... only use tags when you feel that particular keyword should be attached with the post...

Also, with the help of tags, you can group some posts too...
