Analyze your Competitor's back-links. There are free tools online which you can use (but of really limited results) like OpensiteExplorer (https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/) and AHREFS tool. Try to sign up and pitch article requests to the websites they (your competitors) have left their links.

Most of the things you guys have mentioned have been ineffective forms of link building for years.

Do some research into your target market, who are they? What sites are they visiting now?
