If you ever have a really bad link sometimes calling up the host provider can help. In my case with one website that had particulary bad links and thier whois info blocked, the host provided a courtesy and emailed the webmaster and they actually removed the link.

So if anyone has Penguin issues with their this may be able to help a little.

Cheers

The best tip is not removing the bad backlinks and not giving time for removing such links.. instead build quality links from now. Think that your site is fresh, newly created and your website ranking is nowhere, you have to work from now to develop your site....

There is no such things like bad backlinks..... Google is very smart and it understands well...

What if I started creating bad backlinks of your site?

That is totally true... if this was 2011.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

I did like that answer :-)

I was hit with a links penalty over ten years ago, had plenty of so called SEO experts arguing Google won't ban a site for link spamming because it could be a competitor who added the backlinks, blah, blah, blah.

Tell that to my first major website I got to PR8 link spamming (was PR8 one PR update, PR7 for many), when it dropped to PR0 (medium term settled at PR2) and traffic dropped from 8,000+ visitors a day to under 1,000 a day over the space of a week resulting in the business I ran no longer being viable.

I've setup a few SEO tests in the past (not felt the need to retest for half a decade, not a cheap experiment to run) to see what trips a penalty on links, more you add that are obviously link spam, more likely a site will be penalized. Can take anywhere from a few months to over a year for the penalty to hit: more successful the site is, faster the penalty hits IME.

Google has for a very long time penalized sites for their link profile. Google isn't a democracy, Google isn't fair, Google is a business and they don't care if they throw your baby out with the bathwater because the bath is filled with millions of other babies.

If that was true (it isn't) Google would never slap a site with an algo., let alone a warning message in WMT.

Welcome back from 2006! Glad to see you are just starting back up in SEO again.

Good advise from OP, the service that I use reaches out to hosting companies and from what I can tell it works rather well. Most of these spam sites have been hit so hard that they are a burden to the hosting company and they've been looking for an excuse to suspend the account.

That would be called negative seo and if you know about penguin you'd know bad links can kill a sites rankings. Google can weed out lazy negative seo but done right it can certainly hurt websites.

I think the switchbox technique could use some further discussion regarding link building. It is pretty clever to send all your juice to a domain that 301's so you can turn it off if something goes wrong.

I agreed with the folk, bad backlinks effect badly to your search engine rankings. That's why it's always suggested to build quality backlinks. Don't think about the quantity now. After Google's recent updates it's clear that 5 quality backlinks will do mcuh better than 20 low quality backlinks (or so called bad backlinks).
