I have tried using some tools including the MozBar's "Get Keyword Difficulty" button which isnt accurate at all saying all my keywords have a high level of competition.

I am using SEMRush's own tool but im not convinced its that accurate either!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should use Long Tail Pro, Also you can check manually, just search your keyword on Google then check the domain authorities and back links of your competitors then you can have idea about your competition

Any Good SEO toolbar like SEOquack, Google planner and a brain would be enough to get accurate difficulty level.

    Hi,

When I'm checking "keyword" competition I’ll use any many FREE tools as possible. I’ll start by collecting keywords through Google Keyword Planner. You can find a great selection of keywords and ad groups.

However, before starting you should have a good idea of the niche your like to target. I’ll copy 10-20 keywords onto the clipboard and start to manually do a search within Google using (“”) quotations. This will provide me of a number of website which are EXACTLY using this keyword within the title or URL. Next, I’ll use the following,

Market Samurai which is free for 14 days and even Long Tail Pro to see what information that provides. I would recommend purchasing one if you build websites on the regular however if this is a onetime thing then use the free trial. I know what I’m writing so will use the free trial and research 6 months of content.
    Look at the following information:

    · Domain Age
    · Page Authority
    · Domain Authority
    · Links to Page
    · Value of Juice to Page

Now you can use FREE tools like MajesticSEO and OpensiteExplorer to find out all the numbers put its going to be a lot more manual work. If you have money to invest then purchase the software. If you don’t, then do the work manually.

Look for low numbers which you’ll be able to determine watching a few of the tutorials for these softwares.

Long Tail Pro recommends number below 30

Market Samurai will outline numbers in “green” or “red”

It’s a good idea to research the top 5 websites which show up on the SERP’s to see the quality of content they write. Next, it’s important to find out if they are big names, etc.

I hope I covered everything but let me know if you have any questions.
