Question about RSS feeds

How essential are RSS feeds for SEO purposes?
Is it the fact that your feed posted on many other sites will maximize the chances of G finding your new content as soon as possible? Is it the fact that you're automatically getting backlinks for everything produced on your site? Is it a both of these things?
What's the best way to go about submitting my site's feeds to as many sites as possible? Would you recommend paying for software (is this stuff worth it?), or is this a job that can be done manually? Also, how many directories would you suggest submitting to? I see a ton out there that look like the sites aren't trafficked much, but I'd imagine that the more backlinks the better...maybe.
