Stick to keywords with 3,000 monthly searches or less. They are more likely to be low competition keywords than keywords with higher search volumes. Also, analyse the top 10 ranking sites to find out whether they are aggressively trying to rank for the keyword or not.

Not true in most local service niches.

Search volume has nothing to do with competition. You will miss out on a lot of good keywords if you follow this advice.

        True even on global keywords.

I picked up a new domain for a sub-niche with +30K monthly traffic on Keyword Planner, not seasonal & Pinterest is ranked #2 for the keyword.

Really that's probably a good overall strategy for finding decent traffic volume keywords, do the research to see what keywords Pinterest pin pages are ranking at the top of the 1st page of Google SERPs.

It doesn't matter how much average monthly search you see in GKP.. just take a look at competition level. It's no use if you choose just 720 monthly search but it actually a high competition level. You can even rank 3000++ monthly search if the keyword you choose have a low competition level.

To expand your keyword research, just do a Google search for allintitle and allinurl for that keyword. Make sure the result is less than 25k. Cheers!
