Sub-domain vs file folder in cPanel for SEO

For SEO purposes, is it better to use a sub-domain name (with keyword) or a file folder under main domain (with keyword) or does it make any difference to the search engines?

The difference might be in the fact the subdomains (i.e. subdomain.example.com) are seen by the SEs as separate sites while the subfolders (example.com/subfolder) are considered as part of the main example.com site.

  I was just wondering if it made a difference to the search engines or does anyone know? Making folders would be much easier and I could change the keyword (folder name) as needed. Where as with a sub-domain I would need to delete it if the keyword wasn't working. I am looking to see if anyone has tested this. It does make sense that the sub-domain would rank higher.

if possible, had better use a seperated domain on a different hosting, then link to each other. it is a better practice for security reason too.
