I am new at all of this but very eager to learn, so forgive me for such a dumb sounding question. I keep hearing about how about important link sharing is and that it's not uncommon for successful sites to have hundreds and hundreds of links pointing to and from their site. My question is where are these links, I shop at ecommerce sites all the time and never see all these hundreds of links. Where are they, in the code? I don't see them while I'm shopping. Thanks.

Not a dumb question at all. Your website url on another website is a backlink. Look at my sig file. I am linking back to my blog with the words order 1 quick blog post. The World Wide Web is nothing but a bunch of links forming this huge web all intertwined. Backlinks are little roads leading to your site. The more of them you have the more ways people can find you.

eCommerce sites are usually a different story.

While some may have a link to a product's manufacturer or something like that on a specific product page...sending someone off site from your site in that particular manner would likely decrease sales quite a bit.

But look at informational sites, blogs, and thousands of other sites that routinely link out to source/references in their articles, or links to other related stories/blogs/whatever.

eCommerce is a much different beast, at least when it comes to outbound links.
