If I publish an article on my site and then 6 months later use it as a guest post on a different site, will this have any negative effect at all towards my SEO efforts?

It is a duplicate content & even if there is no negative effect it will for sure have zero effect on your SERP Improvements.

You will benefit if you are posting on an Authority site & all you care about is the No-follow link back to your site and the good traffic that it brings along

Can't say it any better than this.

At least re-write the content. You can do it your self or pay someone probably a couple bucks to have it done on a site like iWriter or whatever your favorite article site is. oDesk has some people who work for dang cheap too.

Some of the advise given at times just makes me shake my head.

Do not republish your articles word for word, that's just lazy. Get it rewritten with a new and fresh spin, it doesn't take much effort and then you can benefit from both the links, traffic, and rankings of BOTH articles.

Why only benefit from one and risk duplicate content issues?

Age doesn't make your content unique. Publishing it on your site today and on another site 6 months after today would affect your site just as publishing it on another site tomorrow would. Unless you have rewritten it, don't republish your site's content on other sites.

Why do you want to publish it on another site?

It's a site that's going to send you visitors?

      You're doing it for backlinks?

      Both?

You won't get both to rank, Google might rank the copy on the 2nd site, which means it will not show the one on your site when people are using the keywords you're after. (Unless, of course, you got more / better SEO on the 1st site).
