I'd advice not to use meta descriptions as that limits the search engines. If you do not have a meta description, search engine can randomly pick any line/lines from your site and push you up in the serp for a number of keywords.

That's true, is not required to use meta descriptions (however it is recommended), but search engines will try to grab the most relevant piece of content from your site in their place.

However, these pieces of auto-generated text may be not always the the most appropriate to be displayed in front of new potential visitors in SERP.

So, to increase the CTR, you need to set the meta descriptions. Yet, meta descriptions must be relevant to the page topic, otherwise some search engines (including Google) will generate more relevant descriptions.

Meta description tags are used to control the small snippets of text that is being displayed in the search results. Use this in an optimal way to catch the visitors attention and gaining high CTR from search results.

I have a couple of sites right now with proper meta descriptions and verified those are reporting, but Google is still just grabbing the first bit of text to show in rich snippets. I've had a couple of fellow warriors take a look at it and none of us have been able to figure it out yet.

  • You just had to have strong content in the page having all suitable piece of keywords, usage there nearby synonyms coming it and Google can pick description part from web-content itself. But still if you precisely want to specify main stream work in META Description then you can use that... you are free to update.

Yes, meta description still matters a lot for your website. It briefly describes the information on your website or web page. It also helps in the ranking of your website. It is recommended to write a catchy meta description for your website so that when a user search for the keyword related to your website then your description that appears below the link to your website helps in attracting visitors. This will increase the click through rate of your website.

Meta description still matters, it's the easiest way for a search engine to know what your site is about. If you know how to list your most important keywords, you'll have a lot to gain.

Meta description plays an important role in getting more visitors on search engines. Meta descriptions provide concise explanations of the contents of web pages. Meta descriptions are used to distinguish the keywords that are relevant to a page’s content.
You should know the meta tag keywords were reasonably powerful tools for search engine optimization.
