    I'd advice not to use meta descriptions as that limits the search engines. If you do not have a meta description, search engine can randomly pick any line/lines from your site and push you up in the serp for a number of keywords.

      That's true, is not required to use meta descriptions (however it is recommended), but search engines will try to grab the most relevant piece of content from your site in their place.

      However, these pieces of auto-generated text may be not always the the most appropriate to be displayed in front of new potential visitors in SERP.

      So, to increase the CTR, you need to set the meta descriptions. Yet, meta descriptions must be relevant to the page topic, otherwise some search engines (including Google) will generate more relevant descriptions.

    I have a couple of sites right now with proper meta descriptions and verified those are reporting, but Google is still just grabbing the first bit of text to show in rich snippets. I've had a couple of fellow warriors take a look at it and none of us have been able to figure it out yet.

    You just had to have strong content in the page having all suitable piece of keywords, usage there nearby synonyms coming it and Google can pick description part from web-content itself. But still if you precisely want to specify main stream work in META Description then you can use that... you are free to update.
