What constitutes the perfect meta tag?

Is keyword placement still relevant in SEO, do you still place keywords near to the start of the meta description?

Or do you adopt a more compelling description to entice users on the page, or a combination of both?

Trying to work out the best way to formalise the best meta description, i am thinking perhaps write something compelling which is also contained in the lengthy review, rather than banging keywords at the start of metas and in the title tag.

What approach would you adopt? This clearly is not working.

My current meta tag.

Sunset Overdrive Xbox One, trailers, reviews, videos, screenshots, cheats, gameplay, prices and release dates for this game.

Was going to change it to something more enticing. New Meta.

If you have a pair of eyes and haven't been living on the bottom of the ocean then the odds are good that you've heard of 'Sunset Overdrive'.

Thoughts on this, a better approach, would love feedback on this, would you click the first one or second, neither, honest feedback is much appreciated so be brutal.

There is no problem buddy..........But you can also use long tail phrases here. Also don't go with many keywords...

But which one out of the two would you click, just wondering if stuffing keywords like this is actually more harmful than useful.

      Example meta currently being used.

Sunset Overdrive Xbox One, trailers, reviews, videos, screenshots, cheats, gameplay, prices and release dates for this game.

Just trying to work out which is more beneficial, or perhaps use some of them keywords in the meta keywords instead and formalise a better meta like i previously supplied. like this.

      New meta.

If you have a pair of eyes and haven't been living on the bottom of the ocean then the odds are good that you've heard of 'Sunset Overdrive'.

Possible meta keywords trailers, reviews, cheats, gameplay, etc.

      Cheers.

Most of my webpages are targeting multiple, but related, keywords. I usually leave the meta description blank. What Google will generally do then is pull a piece of content from your webpage that it feels best matches what the searcher is looking for.

So for example in your case, if someone was searching for "sunset overdrive cheats" and there was content on your page about sunset overdrive cheats, Google would pull a part of that content as the meta description. It more closely matches what the searcher was looking for and can increase your click through rate.

It's basically a dynamic meta description that will often more closely match what the searchers want.

The only time I really write out a meta description is if I have a webpage targeting one specific (or maybe 2) keyword.

On a side note, you are picking a tough niche with video games to go after SEO traffic. It will be tough to ever outrank GameSpot, IGN, etc.

The other problem is that each video game has a short, sometimes very short, lifespan. By the time you gain any traction against the big guys, the game might be on the trash heap and gamers are off to the next thing.

Social media might be a better solution.

Thanks for the feedback, yeah I feel this, I am hoping by consolidating it all on one page to possibly gain more exposure to the site, I figured it was the best chance, with a decent 1000 word review.

Just figured sort the meta out as it is not that enticing at the moment for most game pages.
